May is Better Sleep Month

I was wondering why May is “Better Sleep Month” and not February, July or October. Is there something special about May that means we should focus more on better sleep? Does it have something to do with our struggles to adjust to Daylight Saving Time? Or that the days are getting longer and it’s light earlier in the morning and later in the evening? Or is it that the weather is getting warmer, making it more of a challenge to keep our bedrooms cool and comfortable?

None of the above.

May is “Better Sleep Month” because the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) and its consumer-education arm (their term, not ours), The Better Sleep Council has deemed it so. And what a great idea it is.

Each May the Council launches a campaign to provide information to the public about sleep. They do this to focus our attention on how important sleep is to our health, productivity, safety, and just…well….our very existence.

Their campaign theme for 2019 is “Sleep Like a Kid” and has some fun pointing out that kids generally do a better job at falling asleep, and staying there, than we grownups. It reminds us to try and think about sleep like we did when we were very young and to take some hints about sleep from the kids in our lives.

It also shines a spotlight on how very important good sleep habits are for children of all ages.

Like we adults, kids’ sleep is crucial to their very existence. It impacts their physical, mental and emotional development. Giving your kids the tools to develop good sleeping habits early in life will help them thrive throughout their lives.
